Brewing guide: getting the most from your beans
A few simple adjustments can make a big difference in how your coffee tastes.
A few simple adjustments can make a big difference in how your Brewly coffee tastes.
Start with the right ratio
A good starting point is 1 gram of coffee to 16 grams of water. That's about 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 oz of water. Use more coffee for a stronger cup, or less for a lighter one.
Match your grind to your brewer
- French press: coarse, like sea salt
- Drip and pour over: medium, like sand
- Espresso: fine, like powdered sugar
If your coffee tastes sour, try a finer grind. If it tastes bitter, go coarser. You can change your grind anytime if you buy pre-ground coffee.
Use good water
Coffee is mostly water, so filtered water helps. Aim for water just off the boil, between 195°F and 205°F. Let boiled water rest for about 30 seconds before pouring.
Brew fresh
For whole bean coffee, grind right before brewing. Ground coffee starts losing flavor within minutes.
Please note: each bag's tasting card includes a recommended recipe for that specific coffee. Check it before your first brew.
